about

Lisa Ridgely & The Fainting Room’s new digital single, “Stopgap Girl,” explores what it means to be a strong, empowered woman in the 2010s, navigating the waters where dating and politics meet — and sometimes don’t mix.

That “Stopgap Girl” is being released the week before the 2012 presidential election is no mistake — though, everyone’s heard more than enough about Obama and Romney. Touching on the controversial failed recall of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, Lisa instead pines for the good old days of sex scandal and budget surplus under President Bill Clinton. In Wisconsin, what could be more political than the recall? Packer apathy. Sorry! Lisa’s too busy worrying about women’s reproductive rights to care about a silly game!

The band has many passions, and at the top of the list (after music, of course) is the right to participate in our democracy by voting. That’s why, on election day, next Tuesday, Nov. 6, the song will be available for free for anyone who is or becomes a fan on Facebook and tells us they voted! We’ll send them download codes in response.

lyrics

I don't talk sports, and I don't know post-punk
I don't go running, and I don't get beer drunk
You don't text goodnight, and you don't buy flowers
You don't rub my feet, and you don't drink Powers

But you've shown me what it's like to smile
With my soul, not just my mouth — it's been a while
I like what you've taught me, I don't need a carbon
Copy of myself. It's not my style

I don't wanna be your stopgap girl
I don't wanna be your lady in waiting
I just want to be your one and only
Not someone to fill the time 'cuz you're lonely

You voted for Walker, I think he's on crack
I love Bill Clinton and I want him back
I could care less if the Packers lose
As long as I still have the right to choose

I don't know where I'm going, only know where I've been
I'd want babies too if they came out of men
I'm looking for normal, I'm looking for sane
And, no, I'm not changing my last name

I don't wanna be your stopgap girl
I don't wanna be your lady in waiting
I just want to be your one and only
Not someone to fill the time 'cuz you're lonely

But you need time, you need space
To sift through emotion, to find a new place
All the stars in the sky aren't enough for my wishes
For another night with you, I'd even do your dishes

I don't wanna be your stopgap girl
I don't wanna be your lady in waiting
I just want to be your one and only
Not someone to fill the time 'cuz you're lonely

But you don't know who you are right now
Your heart is recovering from broken vows
I want to be a rock for you but I don't know how
To do it without breaking my heart
